MRCPsych Paper B — Premium, Comprehensive Preparation Across the Full Clinical & Critical Review Spectrum

The three books feel much more joined-up than using separate notes for each part of Paper B. I particularly liked how management decisions and common traps are highlighted instead of everything being given the same emphasis. The complete set makes more sense to me because the clinical material and Critical Review complement each other very well.

Very clean presentation and surprisingly easy to navigate for such broad material. The colour coding is actually useful when studying—especially the distinction between diagnostic clues, preferred management and warnings. Volume 3 was excellent for making Critical Review feel less abstract, but I would still choose the full package for proper Paper B coverage.

What I appreciated most was the focus on choosing between two plausible answers rather than simply memorising facts. The rapid matrices are especially useful when several diagnoses or treatments start blending together. I initially concentrated on the clinical material, but having all three volumes together gives a much more complete preparation structure.

This has the feel of a proper study resource rather than a collection of brief revision points. There is enough explanation to understand why an answer is preferred, followed by concise high-yield cues when you return to the topic later. I found the complete package much easier to organise my Paper B preparation around.

The organisation is one of the strongest parts for me. General adult, old age, addictions and forensic topics are handled systematically, while the second volume gives proper attention to areas I tended to postpone, such as psychotherapy, services and intellectual disability. Taken together with Critical Review, the three-volume set feels very well balanced.

Volume 3 deserves particular mention because statistics and appraisal can become unnecessarily confusing in other resources. Here the concepts are broken into manageable sections, with tables and exam-focused distinctions that make them easier to retrieve. I would still go for the complete package because Paper B is much broader than Critical Review alone.

I like that the highlighting has a purpose rather than simply making the pages colourful. After using the books for a while, red immediately draws attention to a danger or trap and green to the preferred management approach. It makes revisiting a chapter much faster. The full three volumes work very naturally as one set.

The clinical sections are written in the way Paper B actually makes you think: what is the best next step, what detail changes the differential, and why is the tempting alternative not quite right? The embedded questions then reinforce that approach. For me the value is definitely in having the whole package rather than fragmented topics.

I found the balance between explanation and exam focus very good. Important distinctions are easy to locate, but the material still gives enough context to understand the reasoning behind them. The Critical Review volume is particularly strong, and combining it with the two clinical volumes gives a much more organised way of preparing for Paper B.

The books are polished and very comfortable to study from on screen. I especially liked the comparison tables and the small high-yield sections because they help when revisiting something quickly without reducing the whole topic to a few isolated facts. I would recommend studying from the three volumes together because their coverage is clearly designed to complement each other.

Volume 2 was a pleasant surprise for me because child psychiatry, learning disability, psychotherapy and services are areas that can easily become scattered across different sources. Here they are arranged in a logical sequence with clear exam warnings and management points. With Volumes 1 and 3 alongside it, the package feels much more cohesive.

The material feels designed for someone actually preparing for the exam rather than simply reading psychiatry. There is a consistent emphasis on differentiating similar options, treatment sequencing and the details that change the best answer. I also found the colour system easy to remember. I would personally keep the complete three-volume set together throughout preparation.

One thing I noticed quickly is how easy it is to move from learning a subject to testing it. The exam-focused notes, matrices and question sections sit naturally within the material instead of feeling like a separate QBank attached at the end. The full package gives a reassuringly broad structure across both clinical psychiatry and Critical Review.

I was mainly looking for something that could make Paper B feel more structured, and these books do that very well. Volume 1 is strong clinically, Volume 2 covers several easily neglected domains, and Volume 3 turns Critical Review into something much more approachable. I think the real advantage comes from using the three as a single preparation set.

The presentation is premium without becoming distracting. Important thresholds, contraindications and management choices stand out immediately, while the surrounding explanations are still detailed enough to understand the reasoning. I also liked the focus on common close-call decisions. As a complete package, the three volumes feel much more useful than choosing only one area to study.
